Located on the Columbia River in Portland just minutes from downtown, M. James Gleason provides convenient public access for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats. The facility features a well-maintained boat ramp, large parking lot, restrooms, and a public beach area suitable for day-use activities. The Multnomah County Marine Patrol office is located adjacent to the ramp. Overnight parking is available for up to four days within a 30-day period. Note that this is a fee-based parking area, and drones/kites are prohibited due to the site's proximity to flight paths.
The ramp provides excellent access to the Columbia River's main channel, with nearby recreation opportunities including the 40-Mile Loop Trail system for post-paddle activities. Fort Vancouver National Historic Site and Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge are also nearby for exploring the region. Beginning in September 2025, improvements to enhance boater access and safety will be underway. All paddlers should wear life jackets, as the Columbia River is a major waterway with significant boat traffic and dynamic water conditions.
