**Location & Facilities**
Map Rock is a well-maintained public access site located approximately 6 miles northwest of Walters Ferry in Canyon County, near Givens Hot Springs. The site features a recently renovated boat ramp (completed in 2018), ample parking, outhouses, solar-powered lighting, and direct walk-in access to the Snake River. This makes it a convenient launching point for day trips and multi-day floats along this section of the river.
**River Conditions & Character**
The Snake River at this location is a major waterway with substantial flow—averaging nearly 50,000 cubic feet per second. The river maintains a moderate gradient of approximately 15.8 feet per mile in this section, creating moving current with scenic canyon habitat ideal for floating and wildlife viewing. Paddlers and boaters should expect a swift, powerful river typical of a major river system; this is suitable for experienced kayakers and canoeists, and all boaters should be prepared for the current and consult current conditions before launching.
**Nearby Recreation**
The area offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, including the nearby Birds of Prey Scenic Float area, and access to designated camping areas along the river corridor downstream. Multiple access points exist in the region (Bernard Landing and Marsing Access are nearby), making it easy to plan shuttle trips or multi-day expeditions.
