The Mathews Brake National Wildlife Refuge offers a convenient boat ramp for kayakers, canoeists, and small motorized boats to access the scenic Mathews Brake. This 7,700-acre refuge was established in 1980 to provide critical habitat for wintering and resident waterfowl. The deep waters and bottomland hardwoods of Mathews Brake attract a diversity of migratory birds throughout the year.
To reach the boat ramp, travel south approximately 0.5 miles from the first bridge on the paved and gravel roads. The paved boat ramp provides easy access to launch your vessel and explore the quiet waters of Mathews Brake. All access to the refuge is by boat, with no visitor facilities at the launch site. Boaters and paddlers should be aware of any applicable refuge regulations, including restricted hours of operation, prior to visiting.
Mathews Brake is a peaceful backwater that offers excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, fishing, and leisure boating. Paddlers can explore the maze of forested channels and inlets, keeping an eye out for herons, egrets, waterfowl, and other species that thrive in this protected wetland habitat. The refuge's remote location and limited access make it a prime destination for those seeking a serene, naturalistic boating experience.
