About This Access Site
McNary Beach offers convenient access to Lake Wallula, a 64-mile reservoir formed by McNary Dam on the Columbia River near Umatilla, Oregon. The Oregon Boat Ramp is located just downstream of the dam, providing a well-maintained launch facility for kayaks, canoes, and motorboats. This area of the Columbia is ideal for recreational paddling, with calm reservoir conditions and designated swimming areas. To reach the ramp, take Highway 730 north onto Beach Access Road, then turn right onto McNary Beach Road to access the park.

The site includes day-use facilities and a nearby campground (McNary Beach - Sockeye Shelter) with reservable sites. The broader Lake Wallula area stretches upstream to the Hanford Site and connects with the Snake River via Ice Harbor Dam, offering extensive exploration opportunities. Paddlers should note that the reservoir features a 86-foot-wide navigation lock at McNary Dam that lifts boats approximately 75 feet—plan accordingly if you intend to transit the dam. For more information or to make campground reservations, contact the facility at 541-922-2268. The area also provides access to the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and proximity to the Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge.
