The Mechanic Street access point provides a concrete boat ramp (16 feet wide) for launching onto the Rock River in Fort Atkinson. This location offers convenient public access to a major river system—the Rock River is a substantial waterway (Stream Order 8) with an average flow of 8,774 cubic feet per second and moderate current averaging 4.5 feet per second. The river's relatively gentle 1 ft/mile gradient makes it generally suitable for recreational paddling and boating.
Before launching, paddlers should note that Jefferson County may require boat launch permits (valid by calendar year). Be sure to check current permit requirements with Jefferson County Parks or the Wisconsin DNR. The Rock River in this area attracts kayakers, canoeists, and motorized boaters, so expect shared water and plan accordingly. For the most up-to-date access information, hours, and any seasonal restrictions, consult the Wisconsin DNR's boat access database at dnr.wi.gov/topic/Lands/boataccess/.
