The Melvern-Arvonia Cemetery boat ramp provides access to the Marais des Cygnes River and Melvern Lake, a major paddling destination in the Flint Hills region. This access point on the eastern edge of Kansas' Flint Hills draws paddlers and boaters year-round. The Marais des Cygnes is a substantial river system—a large stream order 7 waterway with an average flow of 2,690 cubic feet per second and a moderate gradient of 1.6 feet/mile, making it suitable for various paddling skill levels depending on water conditions and season.
The site offers practical amenities for day-use and longer outings, including flush and vault toilets, showers, drinking water, and a dump station. A boat ramp and dock facilitate easy launch and recovery for kayaks, canoes, and motorized boats. Additional facilities include a fish cleaning station and playground areas. Located four miles north of I-35 (exit 160) and three miles east of US 75, the access point is situated along the scenic Marais des Cygnes River corridor surrounded by native timber, creeks, and Flint Hills countryside. Nearby Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge offers additional recreational opportunities for those exploring the region.
