About This Access Site
Located near Fountain City, Wisconsin, the North boat ramp at Merrick State Park provides convenient access to Fountain City Bay on the Mississippi River's Pool 5A. The ramp accommodates both motorized and non-motorized watercraft, making it suitable for kayakers, canoeists, and recreational boaters. The park sits within the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, characterized by scenic backwater channels bordered by steep wooded bluffs.

The North access area includes an island with dedicated boat and canoe launches, a picnic area, pit toilets, and drinking water facilities. The park offers 65 individual campsites across three areas (North, South, and Island), with many waterfront sites available on Fountain City Bay—ideal if you're planning an overnight trip. Note that the South campground may close during high water years. The site is easily accessible by car, located approximately 3 miles from Fountain City and 5.5 miles from State Highway 35.

For paddlers seeking a popular fishing and kayaking destination, this location offers good access to the river's calm backwater sections. Campsite reservations are recommended and can be made up to 11 days in advance. The area provides an excellent basecamp for exploring the refuge's scenic river corridor and wildlife viewing opportunities.
