About This Access Site
Located in Fountain City, Wisconsin, the South boat ramp at Merrick State Park provides convenient access to Fountain City Bay on the scenic Mississippi River backwaters. The ramp accommodates both motorized and non-motorized watercraft, making it suitable for kayakers, canoeists, and larger boats. The access point is situated within the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, offering paddlers the chance to explore a river corridor bordered by striking wooded bluffs that rise 100 to 600 feet above the valley.

The South campground area features 35 campsites with 28 waterfront sites overlooking Fountain City Bay, providing overnight options for those planning extended paddling trips. Note that the south campground may close seasonally during Mississippi River flooding until water recedes and grounds dry. Basic facilities include vault toilets and access to clean water. The area is popular with anglers pursuing crappies, bluegills, and bass, so expect to share the water with fishing activity. With 3 miles of hiking trails nearby and the serene backwater setting, this access site works well for both paddlers seeking scenic day trips and those looking to combine water exploration with camping.
