Millerton Lake State Recreation Area offers excellent water access for kayakers, canoeists, and small boaters. The lake is formed by the Friant Dam on the San Joaquin River and provides over 40 miles of shoreline to explore.
Three major boat ramps provide easy launch points around the lake. Two large 10-lane ramps are located on the south side, while a smaller 2-lane ramp is on the north side near the Meadows Campground. Ample parking is available near each ramp. The north shore ramps sit a bit higher above the water level compared to the south side, so be prepared for a bit more of a carry to the water's edge.
For anglers, Millerton Lake is stocked with bass, catfish, crappie, and trout, making it a popular destination for fishing. A network of hiking trails around the lake also offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, with sightings of ground squirrels, deer, bald and golden eagles, and more. Visitors can stop by the San Joaquin River Gorge Visitor Center on weekends to learn more about the area's natural and cultural history.
