The Milner Historic Recreation Area offers a newly improved boat ramp for access to the Snake River, located 9 miles south of Burley in Cassia County. The facility features a wide concrete Bicentennial Boat Ramp flanked by two metal accessible ramps with handrails, plus stable floating docks designed to accommodate safe entry and exit. This is an excellent put-in point for exploring the Snake River and accessing the Class V whitewater opportunities in the nearby Murtaugh reach when flows are sufficient.
Paddlers should be aware that the Snake River at this location is a major river system with significant volume and strong currents—it averages nearly 50,000 cubic feet per second flow and maintains an average velocity of 10.8 feet per second. The river's steep gradient (15.8 ft/mile average) creates dynamic conditions that demand appropriate skill levels and river experience. The Milner Historic Recreation Area also provides camping amenities and access to historic Oregon Trail sites, making it a good base for multi-day paddling trips. Always check current flow conditions and weather before launching, and ensure you have proper safety equipment and skills suited to the river's powerful currents.
