About This Access Site
Montgomery Recreation Area provides boat ramp access to the Red River, a major waterway flowing through Grant Parish County, Louisiana. The Red River at this location is a powerful river with an average flow of approximately 68,000 cubic feet per second and average water velocity of nearly 6 feet per second, making it suitable primarily for experienced paddlers and boaters. The river's relatively modest 1.6 ft/mile gradient in this region means generally manageable current conditions, though paddlers should always check current water levels before launching, as the ramps close when river levels reach 32 feet with predicted continued rise.

The nearby Magnolia Plantation Store serves as the visitor contact station, offering restrooms and park information. The store's wings are open Wednesday through Sunday, though the main building is only staffed intermittently. For more details about the area and its recreational opportunities, visit the official park website at www.nps.gov/cari/. The region also offers cultural and historical attractions through the nearby Cane River Creole National Historical Park and Cane River National Heritage Area, making it an excellent destination for combined paddling and sightseeing trips. Corral OHV Camp, a reservable campground, is located within 10 miles for those planning extended visits.
