This boat ramp provides access to J. Strom Thurmond Lake, a massive 71,100-acre reservoir on the Savannah River in McCormick County. The lake features 1,200 miles of shoreline and average depths of 37 feet, making it suitable for kayaking, canoeing, and motorized boating. The lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and offers 26 boat ramps across the system, providing multiple launch options if this location is full.
The Mt. Carmel area is a quiet spot for launching onto the lake's calm waters. Paddlers should note that this is a day-use facility managed as part of Bobby Brown State Park and is not reservable. The lake supports good fishing opportunities, with fish attractors and dedicated fishing access locations throughout. For extended trips, Morrow Bridge and Midway Seasonal Campgrounds are located within 10 miles. Additional amenities and facilities (including a visitor center and below-dam recreation area) are available nearby along State Highway 221.
