The South boat ramp at Mud Lake Wildlife Management Area provides access to Owsley Canal and the surrounding 4,500-acre Mud Lake system in Jefferson County. This ramp is one of two maintained launch sites (the other being the North ramp) and is suitable for kayaks, canoes, and motorized boats. The area is part of an 11,468-acre wildlife management area that serves as critical habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds, so paddlers should be prepared for seasonal restrictions and wildlife activity.
**Important considerations for paddlers:** A significant portion of the WMA is closed to all watercraft from April 1 through July 15 to protect nesting birds. Additionally, a wildlife security area within the management area is restricted to non-motorized watercraft only, with no hunting allowed and dogs required to be leashed. The ramp itself can accumulate goose droppings, so watch your footing. The canal may have shallow, marshy sections with cattails and occasional logjams in some areas.
This is one of the few developed access points for Mud Lake, making it a practical choice for paddlers exploring this wetland system. Check with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game for current seasonal restrictions and conditions before your visit.
