Located near Spicewood off Texas 71, the Narrows Recreation Area provides 24-hour access to Lake Travis via a maintained boat ramp. The site is operated by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) and is accessible year-round for day use. Note that reservations are required for weekend and holiday camping (reopening summer 2026), but boat ramp use does not require advance reservations. For information, contact LCRA at 1-800-776-5272 x3366.
Lake Travis is the Colorado River's primary flood-control reservoir on the lower river, meaning water levels can fluctuate significantly, especially during heavy rains and upstream releases. Paddlers should monitor water conditions before launching, as the minimum usable ramp elevation is maintained at 658 feet. The Colorado River itself is a major waterway (Stream Order 8) with substantial flow averaging over 2,200 cubic feet per second, making conditions on the main river more suitable for experienced boaters and kayakers.
To reach the ramp, take Spur 191 north from Texas 71, continue 1.1 miles on CR 4510 to CR 411, then travel approximately 1.5 miles north on the gravel road to the access point. Check current water levels and LCRA conditions before your visit.
