About This Access Site
**Location & Access:**
Pea House is a public boat ramp located on the Black River in Georgetown County, accessed via Big Dam Swamp Road (State Road 38), approximately 1.5 miles north of the SC Highway 41 bridge crossing. The ramp is situated on a side channel on the north side of the river and may not be immediately visible from the main river channel. The facility includes a parking area, dock, and boat ramp.

**River Conditions:**
The Black River is a major river system (Stream Order 9) with substantial flow averaging over 10,500 cubic feet per second. Paddlers should expect moderate current with an average velocity of 2.83 feet/second and a gentle gradient of approximately 1.5 feet/mile. The river's large drainage area (8,413 square miles) means water levels can fluctuate significantly with rainfall. This access point provides good launching for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats exploring the lower Black River swamp environment.

**Planning Your Visit:**
Pea House serves as a convenient put-in for paddlers exploring the Black River's lower reaches and swamp areas. The side-channel location offers a more sheltered launching area compared to the main river channel. Check current water conditions and weather before launching, as the river's substantial flow requires appropriate paddling skills and awareness of potential hazards in swamp navigation.
