About This Access Site
Person Caswell Recreation Park provides boat access to Hyco Lake, a reservoir section of the Dan River located in Leasburg, Person County. This is a large river system (Stream Order 7) with significant flow averaging 4,350 cubic feet per second and an average velocity of 2.92 feet per second. The Dan River watershed drains 3,897 square miles and has an average gradient of 13.8 feet per mile, indicating moderate current conditions rather than placid lake water despite the reservoir impoundment. Boaters should be aware that this section flows through a relatively steep terrain with the river dropping from 962 feet elevation upstream to much lower elevations downstream.

The recreation park serves as a primary access point for both motorized and paddle craft on this section of the Dan River system. Given the river's significant flow rate and gradient, paddlers should have at least intermediate skills, and those unfamiliar with moving water should exercise caution. The access location near Leasburg provides a gateway to exploring approximately 207 miles of river corridor, though local conditions at the reservoir may differ substantially from free-flowing sections downstream.
