About This Access Site
The Pigeon River Fish & Wildlife Area in Orland offers boat ramp access to a substantial northeastern Indiana river system. The Pigeon River is a large stream (classified as stream order 7) with moderate current averaging 3.36 feet per second and a significant gradient of 23.7 feet per mile, making it suitable for paddlers with varying skill levels depending on water conditions. The access point provides launching facilities to explore 17 miles of river corridor within this 12,134-acre protected area.

Paddlers should note important access restrictions: canoeing and kayaking are permitted but may be restricted during waterfowl season—contact the Fish & Wildlife office for current conditions before planning your trip. Electric motors are allowed on designated lakes and ponds within the property. The area also offers hunting and fishing opportunities, so be aware of seasonal activity. Swimming is prohibited at this site.

Beyond paddling, the Fish & Wildlife Area provides extensive recreational amenities including hiking trails, picnic areas, and fishing access. This makes it a good base for a full day of outdoor activities in addition to water-based recreation.
