About This Access Site
Pioneer Park in Newport offers convenient public access to the Pend Oreille River via a dedicated boat ramp. The facility is located just 2.75 miles east of downtown Newport—turn left on South LeClerc Road immediately after crossing the river bridge on US Highway 2. In addition to the boat launch, the campground provides a small beach area, picnic shelter, swimming area, and vault toilets for day-use visitors.

The Pend Oreille River is a major waterway (Stream Order 8) with substantial flow averaging over 26,000 cubic feet per second. The river features a moderate gradient of 2.1 feet per mile over its 141-mile length, making it suitable for various paddling and boating activities. The site is popular for tubing, fishing (bass and trout), and recreational boating. Pioneer Park also offers overnight camping with reservations available through Recreation.gov (509-447-7300) and features the Pioneer Park Heritage Trail with interpretive displays about Kalispel Tribe history.
