About This Access Site
The Point Lobos State Natural Reserve's Whalers Cove offers a unique boat ramp access point to the Pacific Ocean. This short, concrete ramp provides entry to the protected Whalers and Bluefish Coves, which are popular destinations for snorkelers and beginning divers. However, the ramp is the only legal entry point for aquatic activities within the highly regulated reserve.

Paddlers and boaters should note that reservations are required to access the coves, and diving must be done with a partner or small group. The cove itself has a maximum depth of around 30 feet, making it suitable for calm, sheltered snorkeling and diving. Beyond the coves, the reserve provides stunning views of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the California Coastal National Monument, though access is restricted to the designated ramp area.

The Whalers Cove boat ramp is located approximately 3 miles south of Carmel, California, along Highway 1. Visitors should be prepared for the challenging conditions of the Pacific Ocean and follow all regulations and safety protocols when launching watercraft or engaging in aquatic activities within the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.
