About This Access Site
Located in scenic Cook County near Grand Marais, Minnesota, the Popular Lake access site provides a public boat launch onto Poplar Lake, a 764-acre lake with a maximum depth of 73 feet. This is a straightforward access point suitable for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats, with no launch fees. The ramp can accommodate boats up to 12-18 feet, though some larger vessels may be possible depending on ramp conditions.

To reach the access site, take Route 903 east (which becomes Hendricks Mill Road) approximately 8 miles east of I-85 (exit 4). This location serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the lake and accessing nearby backcountry paddling opportunities. The surrounding area offers additional camping options at Flour Lake Campground and East Bearskin Lake Campground, both reservable facilities within 10 miles.

For paddlers looking to extend their trip, Poplar Lake provides access to remote wilderness campsites on nearby waters. Remember to follow Leave No Trace principles—hang food packs, fully extinguish fires, and treat or boil all water for drinking and cooking. Whether you're day-paddling or planning a multi-day backcountry adventure, this access point offers a reliable entry into Cook County's beautiful northern Minnesota waterways.
