The Port Allen Lock access point provides boaters and paddlers with entry to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW), a major navigation corridor combining natural waterways and canals used for both recreational and commercial traffic. This location serves as a critical connection between the GIWW/Gulf of Mexico and the Port of Greater Baton Rouge, with the lock shortening northbound travel to the Mississippi River by approximately 120 miles compared to alternative routes. The site is situated on the west side of the Port Allen Lock and Dam structure.
As a working lock facility, expect heavy commercial barge and shipping traffic along with recreational boaters. Given the lock's primary function as a federal navigation project, paddlers and smaller recreational vessels should be prepared to communicate with lock operations and follow proper procedures when transiting. For specific information about access conditions, lock operation hours, transit procedures, and any current restrictions, contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Port Allen Lock office at (225) 343-3752 or visit usace.army.mil. Note that the ramp on the east/Baton Rouge side is not publicly accessible, so plan your launch accordingly from the west side location.
