About This Access Site
The Porthill access site provides public boat launch facilities on the Kootenai River near Bonners Ferry in northern Idaho. This location offers convenient access to the wide, slow-moving 47-mile section of river that flows between Porthill and Bonners Ferry, making it ideal for kayakers, canoeists, and recreational boaters seeking a more leisurely paddle. The river in this section is relatively inaccessible by other means, providing a peaceful setting for those looking to escape developed areas.

Paddlers should be aware that the Kootenai River offers good fishing opportunities for rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, bull trout, brook trout, and mountain whitefish. For boaters with registered vessels, Kootenai County charges a launch fee (Idaho-registered boats: $4 daily or $20 annual; out-of-state: $8 daily or $40 annual). Those planning extended trips should note that Kootenai Falls, one of the largest undammed waterfalls in the Northwest, is located approximately 20 miles upstream in Montana, marking the beginning of the river's more challenging canyon section.
