About This Access Site
Located near Downing in Comanche County, Proctor Lake Park (Promontory Campground area) provides convenient access to Sowell Creek and Proctor Lake via two well-maintained, lighted 2-lane concrete boat ramps. With parking capacity for up to 50 vehicles, this is a solid launching point for kayakers, canoeists, and other boaters. The facility is located within the day-use areas adjacent to the campground, where you'll find restrooms, picnic areas, and additional amenities to support a full day on the water.

Proctor Lake is known primarily as an excellent fishing destination, particularly for hybrid striped bass, largemouth bass, shad, and crappie. The lake is situated in scenic Cross Timbers terrain with historic significance to the Comanche Indians. For paddlers, this is a flatwater lake environment ideal for recreational paddling, fishing, and relaxation. To reach the park from Comanche, take Highway 16 north for 12 miles to Downing, then turn right on FM 2318 and continue for five miles to the entrance.
