About This Access Site
The Rainy Lake Visitor Center, located 11 miles east of International Falls on Highway 11, provides a free public boat launch with direct access to Rainy Lake and Voyageurs National Park. The facility sits on the shore of Black Bay with scenic views across to the Kabetogama Peninsula. This is a convenient starting point for kayakers, canoeists, and boaters exploring Minnesota's only water-based national park, where water access is the primary way to navigate the park since roads do not penetrate the interior.

The visitor center itself offers helpful amenities including an exhibit area, information desk, bookstore, and theater showing park films—useful stops before or after your paddling trip. For current conditions, hours, and specific launch details, contact the facility at (218) 286-5258. Rainy Lake is expansive and offers excellent opportunities for extended water-based exploration, including multi-day paddling trips and houseboat rentals available through local providers. Note that the facility is not ADA accessible, and advance planning is recommended for those seeking backcountry camping permits in Voyageurs National Park.
