About This Access Site
Located in Merritt along the Dead Stream Flooding and Muskegon River, this rustic state forest campground offers convenient water access for paddlers and boaters. The 38-site facility accommodates vehicles and trailers up to 40 feet, with 15 waterfront sites available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Boat access is available directly from the campground, and boat rentals are also offered on-site, making it accessible for those without their own watercraft.

The Dead Stream Flooding area spans 30,000 acres and is known for excellent fishing and wildlife viewing opportunities. Paddlers can expect a scenic environment with abundant waterfowl, including Buffleheads, Common Goldeneyes, Wood Ducks, and various duck species—particularly rewarding during spring. The campground provides a practical base for exploring the Muskegon River system in this region. Contact the Roscommon Management Unit for current information on availability and amenities.
