About This Access Site
The Ripley boat ramp provides paved access to Lake Koocanusa and the Kootenai River in north-central Montana near the town of Ripley. This is one of four maintained paved ramps serving the lake, making it a reliable launch point for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats exploring this 90-mile reservoir. The site is conveniently located approximately 17 miles south of Libby Dam, putting you within striking distance of both the scenic impoundment and the highly regarded Kootenai River downstream.

Lake Koocanusa offers excellent recreational opportunities, including access to one of the Pacific Northwest's premier landlocked salmon fisheries, as well as trophy-size trout waters. The area is ideal for multi-day paddling trips, with two marina complexes (Cripple Horse on the south end and Mariners Haven Resort near Rexford to the north) offering services and supplies. The nearby Kootenai National Forest provides additional exploration opportunities.

For trip planning, consider staying at one of two reservable campgrounds within 10 miles: Timberlane Campground or McGillivray Campground. The Libby Dam Visitor Center, located 17 miles north, offers educational exhibits and scenic overlooks. This access point works well as a base for paddling the lake or as a starting point for exploring the Kootenai River downstream of the dam.
