The Riverside Drive access point on the Colorado River near Bastrop provides a convenient launch for kayakers and canoeists exploring this major river system. Located off Riverside Drive in the Lost Pines area, this site is managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in partnership with the Pines & Prairies Land Trust. Note that **a gate code is required for access**, and a suggested donation of $5 per person and $5 per boat supports the Texas River School's maintenance of the facility.
The Colorado River here is a substantial waterway—the 8th order stream drains over 27,000 square miles and carries an average flow of 2,200 cubic feet per second. Paddlers should expect moderate current typical of a major river corridor, with an average gradient of 3.2 feet per mile. The river's size makes it suitable for canoes, kayaks, and motorboats, though paddlers should respect the typical water velocities and plan accordingly for their skill level.
When accessing this site, drive south from Highway 71 on Tahitian Drive, then turn right onto Riverside Drive. Parking is available on higher ground, with vehicle access to the water prohibited. The ramp is located on your left as you face downstream, and the surrounding Lost Pines Nature Trails offer additional recreation opportunities for those looking to explore the area beyond the water.
