Located in remote northeast Nevada near Shanty Town, this access point provides entry to Ruby Lake Marsh, one of the lower 48's most isolated wildlife refuges. The marsh sits at the southern end of Ruby Valley, backed by the scenic Ruby Mountains to the west. No special permits or reservations are required to launch. This is an excellent destination for wildlife viewing and fishing for trout and largemouth bass.
Paddlers should be prepared for the unique challenges of navigating an expansive marsh system—the waterway is characterized by a complex, labyrinthine layout that requires careful route-finding. Before launching, familiarize yourself with the marsh's channels and potential shallow areas, especially in lower water periods. Spring through early summer generally offers the best water conditions for boating and paddling.
Nearby amenities include South Ruby Campground (within 10 miles), which offers reserved camping. Note that a no-hunting zone is posted near the Main Boat Landing and Brown Dike Restroom for public safety. This is a remote area—come prepared with supplies and navigation knowledge, and check current refuge conditions before your visit.
