Sam Houston Jones State Park offers convenient access to the West Fork of the Calcasieu River via two well-maintained boat launches. These ramps provide paddlers and boaters with access to a scenic waterway system with excellent connectivity—the Gulf of Mexico is only a few miles downstream, while Lake Charles and Calcasieu Lake are accessible further along the waterway network. The park's location in Calcasieu Parish makes it an ideal launch point for exploring the diverse bayou ecosystem of southwestern Louisiana.
The West Fork is a peaceful, swamp-bordered paddling destination suitable for kayaks and canoes. Be aware that this is wildlife habitat—alligators are present in the area, so swimming is not recommended. The park amenities include picnic facilities and scenic cabin rentals, making it a good base for extended paddling trips or day outings on the water.
