Sandy Point is the primary northern access point to Shagawa Lake, located conveniently adjacent to County Road 88 near Ely. This established boat ramp facility features an impressive 22 launching ramps and six finger piers available for temporary day-use docking on a first-come, first-served basis, making it well-suited for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats. The marina includes a boat pump-out station (operational April through October) and can accommodate boats up to 12-18 feet at most ramps, with some ramps capable of handling larger vessels.
As one of two main public accesses on Shagawa Lake, Sandy Point provides reliable launching infrastructure with no launch fees. The facility's multiple ramps help distribute traffic during busy periods, reducing congestion for paddlers and boaters. Paddlers should note that the nearby Fenske Lake Campground (reservable) is within 10 miles, offering convenient overnight accommodation options for multi-day trips on this popular northeastern Minnesota lake.
