About This Access Site
Shady Creek offers direct access to the Mississippi River via a boat ramp, though paddlers should note that the ramp is frequently reported as shallow and water levels can affect launch conditions. Located on a 22-acre park along the river's banks near Muscatine, the facility provides restrooms, picnic areas, and a nature trail. Camping is available seasonally (May 1–October 25) through Recreation.gov, where you'll need to create an account and use the mobile app to access the site—credit cards only, no cash accepted. For reservations or site details, call 563-419-0857.

The Mississippi River at this location is a major waterway with significant current and flow. Expect an average velocity of 11.24 feet/second and substantial traffic from commercial and recreational vessels. The river supports excellent fishing for channel catfish, walleye, bluegill, and northern pike, and the area is known for bird watching. Paddlers should be prepared for the river's size, strong current, and navigation channel traffic; always wear a life jacket and check current conditions before launching.
