About This Access Site
Shanklins Ferry Campground offers watercraft access to Bluestone Lake, West Virginia's third largest lake at 2,040 acres. Located in the Bluestone Wildlife Management Area near Neponset, this site provides a scenic launching point for kayakers, canoeists, and boaters looking to explore the lake formed by Bluestone Dam on the New River. The campground setting makes it convenient for multi-day paddling trips or leisurely day outings on the water.

Note that the primary boat launch for larger vessels is located at the Pit Area off Route 20, while Shanklins Ferry serves as a secondary access point better suited for smaller craft like jon boats, canoes, and kayaks. The surrounding 17,000+ acres of the Wildlife Management Area offer additional recreation opportunities including archery and shooting ranges. This access point is ideal as a base camp for exploring both Bluestone Lake and the nearby Bluestone National Scenic River, known for its rugged Appalachian gorge scenery.
