Shawnee State Park provides public boat access to the Kanawha River in Dunbar, located at 2000 West Virginia 25. This ramp is maintained by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and offers a convenient launch point for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats on the lower Kanawha River. The site features river viewing areas and beach access, making it a scenic launching location for paddlers exploring this major waterway.
The Kanawha River in this area is part of the navigable pool system, with the nearby Winfield Pool upstream supporting significant commercial barge traffic for coal and chemical shipment. Paddlers should be aware of occasional towboat and barge traffic, particularly if planning longer trips downstream. The Marmet Pool, located 15 miles downriver near Belle, WV, provides a 9-foot navigable channel and represents another access point for extended paddling trips.
