Shell Mound Primitive Boat Launch

Shell Mound is a primitive boat ramp located at the end of County Road 326 in Cedar Key, providing access to Suwannee Sound and the coastal waters of Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge. This launch serves as a gateway to the Gulf of Mexico's coastal marsh habitat, offering paddlers and boaters access to approximately 30 miles of scenic Gulf-facing saltwater environment. The site includes basic parking for vehicles (approximately 6 spaces available) but lacks amenities such as restrooms.

This location is ideal for kayakers and canoeists exploring the estuary and coastal waters of Suwannee Sound, as well as anglers targeting inshore species. Paddlers should be prepared for saltwater conditions and tidal fluctuations typical of Gulf coastal areas. The site's proximity to both Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge (established 1929) and Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge—which encompasses 20 miles of the Suwannee River and extensive coastal marshes—makes this an excellent base for exploring these protected natural areas.
