Shelter Cove

Shelter Cove is a small coastal community located along the rugged King Range of Northern California's Pacific coast. The boat ramp and beach access here provide a unique opportunity for kayakers, canoeists, and small boat owners to access the open ocean.

The ramp is located within Mal Coombs Park, which offers amenities like parking, picnic areas, and restrooms. At high tide, the relatively steep ramp can accommodate launching most trailered boats, though caution is advised. The ramp is primarily used by sport and commercial fishing vessels, and a local boat launching business operates in the area.

The protected cove provides a relatively sheltered launch area, though paddlers and boaters should still exercise appropriate caution when entering the open ocean. The nearby King Range National Conservation Area offers dramatic coastal scenery and opportunities for further exploration by water. Those planning a trip to Shelter Cove would do well to research tides, weather conditions, and safety considerations before launching.

Mal Coombs Park is located on the west side of the small resort town of Shelter Cove. There is a small rocky beach hidden away below the park. Mal Coombs has a parking lot, picnic tables, interpretive panels and a BBQ pit. At low tide, the abundant marine life is exposed in tide pools below the beach. Mal Coombs Park is also the home to the relocated Cape Mendocino Lighthouse.
