Shields Lake is a 940-acre lake in Rice County near Lonsdale with a maximum depth of 42 feet. This site provides public access via a boat ramp on the north shore in the northernmost bay. The launch can accommodate most boats up to 12-18 feet, though some ramps may handle larger vessels. There are no launch fees unless the access is within a park requiring a vehicle permit.
**For kayakers and canoeists:** Access is limited to carry-in boats at this location, making it ideal for paddlers. The natural shoreline to the east of the boat ramp, the lake's islands, and the west shore offer scenic paddling opportunities. Note that a second DNR-owned access and a county-owned access (McCollough Park) are also available on the north bay if you're exploring multiple launch options around the lake.
