About This Access Site
Located north of Horseshoe Beach in Dixie County, Florida, Shired Island offers convenient public access to Shired Creek and the Gulf of Mexico. This government-owned facility features a single-lane paved ramp with adequate parking for boat trailers and vehicles, plus a pier for additional access. The ramp provides quick entry to brackish waters, making it ideal for kayakers and canoeists heading into the Gulf's coastal marsh habitat or exploring nearby waterways.

The site is well-positioned for exploring the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge, which spans 20 miles of the famous Suwannee River and 30 miles of pristine coastal marsh along the Gulf. Paddlers can access diverse saltwater and brackish ecosystems from this launch point. The Dixie Mainline Loop, a popular paddling route, connects Horseshoe Beach to Suwannee, offering multiple day-trip and expedition options in this scenic, remote region of Florida's Big Bend coast.
