Simpler Fish Camp offers boat access to the Choctawhatchee River, a major waterway in the Florida Panhandle. Located on a small bluff overlooking the river in Walton County, this facility provides a long, steep single-lane concrete ramp for launching kayaks, canoes, and motorboats. **Note:** The ramp becomes very shallow at low water levels, so plan your visit accordingly and check current water conditions before launching.
The Choctawhatchee River is a substantial stream system with an average flow of over 7,700 cubic feet per second and a gentle slope of about 1.1 feet per mile, making it generally suitable for paddlers of varying skill levels. As a major river system draining 4,527 square miles of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, expect moderate current and occasional boat traffic. The river eventually flows to the Gulf of Mexico approximately 143 miles downstream from this access point. A Florida fishing license is required if you plan to fish, and the area is known for excellent fishing opportunities, particularly on Holmes Creek, a spring-fed tributary.
