About This Access Site
The Smith Reservoir State Wildlife Area offers a boat ramp access point for paddlers and small boaters on Ute Creek, a medium-sized mountain river in southern Colorado. The boat ramps are located on the southwest shore of the reservoir, near the parking area.

Ute Creek is a headwater stream with a total length of over 120 miles and an elevation drop of around 7,500 feet from source to mouth. The average flow is about 35 cubic feet per second, with a moderate gradient of 62 feet per mile. These characteristics make Ute Creek well-suited for both canoeing and kayaking, particularly in the calmer, slower-moving sections around the reservoir.

While the boat ramps provide easy access to the water, it's important for visitors to be aware that the shoreline can be tricky, with deep, sandy areas that could potentially cause boats to get stuck. A valid hunting or fishing license is also required to use the State Wildlife Area. Nearby facilities include the Lakes End Campground, which is only accessible by boat. Visitors should check current conditions and regulations before planning their trip.
