**Location & Access**
South Bootlegger is a boat ramp providing access to Lake Elwell (Tiber Reservoir) on the Marias River in north-central Montana, located near Ledger in Toole County. The site is reached via the Bootlegger Trail gravel road; note that this is a remote location with the nearest alternative access point approximately 10 miles away at the dam, and the next access 35+ miles in the opposite direction.
**Lake & Fishing Information**
Lake Elwell is a 21,300-acre reservoir formed by Tiber Dam in the 1950s, offering 181 miles of shoreline for paddlers and boaters to explore. The lake is popular for fishing, with northern pike, walleye, and rainbow trout as primary game fish. However, **be aware that reservoir levels fluctuate significantly**—recent reports indicate water levels can drop substantially below full pool, which may affect launch and landing conditions.
**Current Status & Planning**
Before visiting, check current conditions, as South Bootlegger and other regional ramps have been reported as not recommended during periods of low water levels. Plan accordingly if water levels are below normal, and consider contacting local recreation management offices for the most up-to-date launch conditions. The site is best suited for day-use paddling and boating given its remote location.
