About This Access Site
Spring Garden is a boat ramp access point on the Neuse River in New Bern, located in Craven County. The Neuse River at this location is a major waterway with significant flow, averaging over 6,300 cubic feet per second. The river has a gentle gradient of about 1 foot per mile and maintains an average velocity of 3.46 feet per second, making it a substantial tidal river system influenced by ocean conditions about 252 miles downstream.

This section of the Neuse River is suitable for a variety of recreational boating activities. The river's size and current characteristics make it navigable for motorboats, kayaks, and canoes, though paddlers should be aware of the consistent current flow and tidal influences. Given the river's major status and drainage area of over 5,500 square miles, boaters may encounter commercial traffic and should stay alert for other vessels in the area.

The New Bern area offers good access to the lower Neuse River watershed. Boaters launching from Spring Garden should be prepared for open water conditions on a larger river system and should check tide charts before launching, as tidal effects are significant at this location.
