The St. Francis Sunken Lands State Wildlife Management Area offers boaters and paddlers access to Ditch No. 60, a waterway that flows through the unique wetlands of this protected area. The primary boat ramp is located at the end of Oak Donnick Lane, about 1.3 miles from the main road. This ramp provides the best access point for exploring the interior of the management area by boat.
Ditch No. 60 is a slow-moving, navigable waterway that meanders through the flooded forests and marshes of the Sunken Lands. This area was formed by the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-12, which caused the ground along the St. Francis River to drop 6-8 feet, resulting in extensive flooding. Today, the Sunken Lands provide important habitat for a variety of bird species and other wildlife.
While the majority of the Sunken Lands is only accessible by boat, there are several other access points along the perimeter, including Siphons Access, Stephens Landing, Mangrum Landing, and the Lake City Highway 18 bridge. Paddlers and boaters should be prepared for potentially challenging conditions, as flooding can render much of the area inaccessible at times. Those venturing into the Sunken Lands are encouraged to exercise caution and leave no trace to preserve this unique and fragile ecosystem.
