Renfro Lake Primitive Access provides a launch point for exploring a 20-acre freshwater lake within St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge's Wakulla Unit. Located west of the town of St. Marks off US 98, this primitive access site is ideal for kayakers, canoeists, and small boat operators looking for a peaceful paddling experience in a wildlife refuge setting. The refuge features diverse habitats including upland forests, palm hammocks, and fresh and brackish water marshes, making it excellent for wildlife viewing.
Boaters should note that motors are restricted to 10 horsepower or smaller, and boat access is typically allowed March 15-October 15. The refuge also offers opportunities for bank fishing year-round in its 2,000 acres of man-made pools. Additionally, Renfro Lake sits near approximately 5.5 miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail that traverses through the refuge, including the popular "Cathedral of Palms" hike to Shepard Spring, making this an excellent base for combined water and land exploration. As a primitive access site within a wildlife refuge, expect minimal facilities and plan accordingly.
