About This Access Site
Stone Cliff offers a boat ramp and sandy beach access to the New River in the heart of New River Gorge near the historic town of Thurmond. The site provides a convenient put-in for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboaters looking to explore this ancient, scenic river corridor. A gravel access road leads directly to the boat launch, with parking available nearby.

The surrounding area features a primitive walk-in campground with 7 sites (5 on the sandy beach, 2 in the forest), making it ideal for paddlers planning multi-day trips. The campground is tent-only with no facilities beyond pit toilets and no potable water, electric hookups, or fees. Access is non-reservable and first-come, first-served. The New River here flows through dramatic gorges and is well-suited for paddling, with opportunities for fishing and swimming along the way.

**Directions:** From U.S. Route 19 north of Beckley, take the Glen-Jean-Thurmond exit, turn left to Glen Jean, then follow WV Route 25 toward Thurmond for 6 miles. At a three-way intersection, bear right for 1.5 miles, then turn right onto a gravel road just before the bridge. Continue past the boat launch to the parking area. For more information, contact (304) 465-0508.
