Cattail Pit is one of approximately 100 water bodies within the Sugar Ridge Fish & Wildlife Area, a sprawling 8,500-acre recreational complex in Pike County near Stendal. The pit is accessible via a boat ramp in Area 6, making it a convenient launch point for kayakers, canoeists, and small boaters exploring the reclaimed strip-mine landscape. Please use designated parking areas when accessing the site.
The Cattail Pit and surrounding pits are characterized by shallow waters surrounded by dense cattail vegetation. Expect low-speed boating conditions and be aware that dense vegetation around the shorelines may require careful navigation, particularly in smaller paddled craft. The area is popular with anglers, so you may share the water with fishing boats. Note that cattails and submerged vegetation can obscure deeper fishing areas and create navigation challenges—survey your route before launching.
Sugar Ridge FWA offers excellent opportunities for wildlife observation alongside paddling and boating. The property's proximity to the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge and Management Area adds to the ecological value of the region. For detailed information about current conditions, water levels, and specific regulations for Cattail Pit, contact the Sugar Ridge FWA office directly.
