The Sundance recreation area provides boat ramp access to Melvern Lake, a 6,900-acre reservoir on the Marais des Cygnes River in Osage County. This U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility features a concrete boat ramp and accessible dock, making it suitable for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats. The site is located on the north shore of the lake in the scenic Flinthills region near Arvonia.
Amenities at Sundance include flush and vault toilets, drinking water, and a fish cleaning station. The area operates on a first-come, first-served basis for day-use picnic sites. The reservoir offers relatively calm water conditions compared to the flowing Marais des Cygnes River upstream, making it ideal for recreational paddling and boating. The lake's size and protected nature provide good conditions for various water activities, while nearby Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge offers additional exploration opportunities in the surrounding area.
