The Thane boat ramp provides direct access to the Pacific Ocean and Gastineau Channel near Juneau, Alaska. This is a popular launching point for kayakers, canoeists, and small powerboats exploring the scenic waterways around the city.
The ramp is located about 4 miles south of downtown Juneau, at the mouth of Sheep Creek where it flows into the Gastineau Channel. During the summer months, the channel sees an abundance of spawning salmon, attracting wildlife like gulls and seals to the area. Boaters should be aware of the strong tidal currents in the channel and plan trips accordingly.
While the Thane ramp offers convenient water access, it's important to note that much of Prince William Sound has limited direct boat launch options from the road system. Boaters may need to use harbor ramps in communities like Whittier, Valdez, or Cordova to access the broader regional waterways.
