About This Access Site
**Location & Access:**
Thayer Access Point is located near Thurmond in Fayette County along the New River in New River Gorge. To reach the site, take Route 25 from Glen Jean toward Thurmond, turn right just before the bridge, continue toward Stone Cliff, cross the New River bridge, and proceed upstream on Route 25. The access point is situated near Thayer Campground, a walk-in only facility with 4 tent sites (camping reservations not available).
**What to Expect:**
This is a public boat launch managed by West Virginia DNR for access to the New River, one of the oldest rivers on the continent. The New River is known for rugged whitewater conditions as it flows northward through deep canyons within New River Gorge National Park & Preserve. The launch accommodates various watercraft including kayaks, canoes, and motorized boats. Facilities are basic—the site itself does not offer ADA accessibility, and amenities are limited.
