**Location & Facilities**
Thrall is a public boat ramp located near Ellensburg on the Yakima River in Kittitas County. The site offers a gravel ramp, ample parking, and a pit toilet. Note that winter conditions can make the ramp icy; consider bringing a rope to assist with launching or landing in cold months. This is a no-frills facility—wade-in access is limited, so plan accordingly.
**Paddling & Trip Planning**
This access point marks the beginning of a scenic 12.3-mile float to Ellensburg, where the river exits farmland and enters the Yakima River Canyon with its dramatic basalt cliffs. Plan for at least 6 hours of paddling time at a moderate pace. Below Thrall, much of the surrounding land is private property, making mid-route takeouts difficult, so this stretch requires a full-day commitment. The Teanaway River confluence upstream adds significant flow to this section, creating a broader, more substantial river experience typical of western waterways.
**Important Note**
Watercraft must portage around or carefully navigate the Roza Diversion Dam located downstream (approximately 10 miles north of Yakima). High water conditions can make dam portaging hazardous—check current flow conditions before launching.
