About This Access Site
Located in Wellston on the Manistee River, the Tippy Dam boat ramp provides access to both the free-flowing river below the dam and the upstream Tippy Dam backwaters. This is an excellent access point for kayakers and canoeists exploring the Manistee River, which is known for excellent steelhead, chinook, and coho salmon fishing. The recreation area features two separate boat launches—one on the main river and one on the dammed backwaters—allowing paddlers to choose between different water conditions based on their skill level and interests.

The access site includes basic amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets within walking distance. The area is part of the larger Tippy Dam Recreation Area, which offers a rustic year-round campground, hiking trails, and a rustic cabin. For overnight paddling trips, several reservable campgrounds are available within 10 miles, including Sand Lake Campground, Upper Manistee River Backcountry Campsites, and Seaton Creek Campground. Paddlers planning trips downstream should note that Government Landing and Red Bridge also have boat ramps for take-outs.
